A striking violet that has lavender to purple flowers with orange centers and finely lobed leaves, birdfoot violet’s preferences are unlike other violet species. It does best in part or full sun, can easily be crowded out by other plants, and prefers nutrient poor rocky or sandy soil where it can reseed freely. Like all violets it is an important spring nectar plant for native bees and an important host plant for fritillary butterflies.
