Northern Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor)

The most well-known of the native irises, northern blue flag can be found growing in the water or along the banks of ponds and streams in the wild. It prefers wet conditions but will grow less robustly in average soil. Feeds both native bees and hummingbirds during the quiet time, between Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and bee-balm (Monarda sp.), in late spring.
