Always a delight to see in the woods, mayapple grows well in woodland areas and will spread a bit each year. It blooms as the Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are finishing and after other woodland ephemerals. As the colony grows it can become an attractive woodland ground cover and may crowd out other species. Its seeds are a favorite of box turtles.
