Hazel Alder (Alnus serrulata)

$25.00

Also known as hazel alder, smooth alder is a fast growing shrub that is commonly found along stream banks and other wet areas. Clusters of yellow-brown catkins emerge on bare branches in early spring and twigs are topped with small red flowers. Flowers turn into nutlets that resemble pinecones and remain on the plant, providing seed well into winter. Dense deep green foliage provides cover for birds and hosts numerous butterflies. Fixes nitrogen in the soil.
