Into the Community
Pocket Habitats
The meadow at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve is a unique educational resource. It is a treasure trove of beauty and learning opportunities and serves as a living example of how to garden responsibly while providing food and shelter for wildlife. But we are just one place, one small piece of the puzzle. While the Preserve’s meadow is beautiful and provides real life experiences and insight into the natural world, it is our mission to take native habitat preservation outside of the Preserve grounds and share it with the community.
Established in 2016, the Preserve’s Pocket Habitat program has successfully delivered environmental education programs and installed more than a dozen schoolyard and community garden habitats in the Delaware Valley region. Since its inception, the program made a positive impact; during the collaborations between Preserve staff and program partners everyone learned a great deal about themselves and the community.
One of the most important lessons learned is that the plants provided by the Preserve are a valuable resource to offer on a consistent, lasting basis. With this in mind, the Pocket Habitat program is evolving to focus less on program delivery and garden design. Instead, the program will concentrate on what the Preserve is uniquely positioned to offer: donations of quality native plants to a limited number of worthwhile community and school garden projects.
If you are involved with a school or a non-profit group that is creating a community garden project featuring native plants and would like to be considered for a donation, please email BHWP@BHWP.org.
Please ensure that your message includes the following information in order to be considered:
- the name of your group
- any design associated with the project
- how the project will benefit the community
- site information, including photos
The Preserve staff is heartened and grateful for the community’s interest in and support of native plant habitats. The team looks forward to sharing the Preserve’s mission and continuing to build partnerships in our Delaware Valley community.
