An underutilized spring flowering tree, American plum is covered in fragrant white flowers in spring. In late summer small reddish gold fruits appear, the skin is tart but flesh is sweet, and the plums are frequently used for preserves. Fruiting is best when another tree is in the vicinity for cross pollination. It can be grown as a single trunk tree or allowed to sucker and form thickets useful for screening. Exceptionally high wildlife value for pollinators and butterflies and moths.
