A welcome sight in the spring, common blue violet blooms from March until June and occasionally again in the fall. It spreads by rhizomes and seeds and can become an easy woodland ground cover, especially by transplanting seedlings next to existing clumps. Thrives in part sun and part shade and is not particularly fussy about soil conditions. An important host plant for fritillary butterflies.
