Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)

A favorite small tree which blooms a few flowers at a time over a long period in the summer. Sometimes grown solely for the pleasing fragrance of the flowers which is especially strong in early evening—presumably to attract late day and evening pollinators. Shiny leaves on open multi-stem trunks add to its appeal. Consider planting wild ginger (Asarum canadense) underneath it.
