Fall is a wonderful time of year for painting; the daylight, colors, and weather all conspire to create a glorious painting experience! In this class participants work in nature, in the medium of their choice, with the goal of achieving clear, legible paintings. When painting outdoors, en plein air, there is such a bewildering welter of “stuff” to paint that we often don’t know where to begin. Yet somehow, we have to start with a solid vision for our painting. The first day begins with a demonstration outlining the fundamental concepts all artists must use in order to achieve a successful landscape.
Using oil paint, instructor Henry Martin will display how to use value to generate luminosity, composition to achieve unity, and color and edges to create a sense of space. All levels are welcome, and students are encouraged to proceed at their own pace throughout this six-week course. Please bring pencils and paper (or your own paints) the first day, and be ready to paint or draw and ask questions.
Since we anticipate students of different levels, the instructor will discuss materials on an individual basis.
Please note this series must be purchased as a whole, in advance. Individual sessions are not available for purchase. This series takes place on six Sundays: Sept. 20 – Oct. 25.
Please note: Also, participants are also required to bring and wear a mask and practice appropriate social distancing.
Henry moved to Philadelphia from St. Louis via Kodiak, Alaska, to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy. He subsequently graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania coordinated degree program, completing my studies in 1994. After leaving school, I painted in Spain, choosing Madrid for its magnificent museums. His main focus is painting landscapes, imbuing them with a sense of atmosphere and distance. I call myself the “Painter of Space and Light”. You can see more of Henry’s work at http://henrymartinart.com/.
