Elephant’s foot gets its name from the large basal leaves of the plant. In addition to the attractive lower leaves, it is valued for a late summer to fall bloom. Each flower head rests upon leafy bracts and contains pale lavender disc florets. When in full bloom a whole inflorescence can be mistaken for a large single bloom. Elephantopus carolinianus can be found growing along streambanks, roadsides and pastures. It is related to ironweeds.
