Birds and their Nests with Priscilla Hayes (Fourth Fridays for Families Apr. 22)
Free
It may be shocking to learn, but birds do not live in nests year-round. Birds only use nests to lay and hatch their eggs. After they raise their young, they leave the nests behind. This means that birds build nests at least once every year—most birds start from scratch. It’s a lot of work to find all the material and carefully fashion a safe place to raise babies. Priscilla Hayes will explore the lives of our feathered friends and participants will help them with their nest building by creating a nesting material basket. Hang up the basket at home after the class, and provide our winged neighbors with the materials they need for a successful nesting season.
Priscilla Hayes has been designing and implementing hands-on environmental education programs for preK-12 schools and children since the 1990`s when she originated hands-on education programs for her Clean Communities and Recycling Coordinator educational program with Robbinsville Township. She has always emphasized living sustainably with nature in her programs, and in 2013 was honored with the Garden State Green Award as an educator for her work at Far Hills Country Day School. She was the school garden educator for three Princeton schools and developed the birds nesting basket program for her students at those schools.
