SUMMARY:Knowing Native Plants: Plant ID with Ed Lignowski\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how botanists classify plants? What characteristics make up the commonality of each group? This program will introduce you to the basics of identifying conifers and flowering plants using dichotomous keys. Ed Lignowski\, Ph.D.\, former botany/plant physiology college professor\, will teach you the vegetative and reproductive morphological features and terminology needed to use a typical plant identification key. \nPLEASE NOTE: This class will not include a walk and be conducted virtually via Zoom.\n \nAdditional Information: Online registration for this program closes 12 hours before the start of the class. If you need help with registration\, please email education@bhwp.org. DESCRIPTION:This program has a tiered pricing system that allows you to pay what you wish. \nJoin Priscilla Hayes\, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve volunteer naturalist and certified yoga teacher\, for gentle yoga that builds body awareness\, strength\, flexibility and a better understanding of how humans connect to and reflect natural systems. On your mat each week\, you will notice the small—or not so small—changes in yourself: the community of your body\, mind and spirit. \nEach session will include breath exercises\, yoga poses\, and gentle self-care exercises/meditations. Create an intimate awareness of your body and self surrounded by the mosses and plants as they provide you lovely fresh air and peace. \nSafe social distancing will be practiced throughout each session\, and participants are asked to bring their own mats\, a blanket\, and any other props (a block and a strap are recommended). \nPriscilla Hayes was inspired to become a yoga teacher after she experienced the benefits of yoga firsthand\, in both healing and developing flexibility after a knee replacement. Wanting to pass those same benefits on to others\, she completed teacher training at Honor Yoga in 2018 and did her first year and a half of teaching there\, as well as completing additional training in various yoga specialties. She left to pursue her passions of yoga in nature and of inspiring others to engage in a daily home practice. She has been teaching in the moss garden at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve since late spring 2020 (with a winter break). Since August 2020\, she has been posting approximately half-hour sequences combining yoga with other self-care practices at Home Practice Breaks\, https://www.facebook.com/homepracticebreaks\, which\ncan be accessed at any time for free. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Knowing Native Plants: Wildflowers in Winter with Mary Anne Borge
DESCRIPTION:Even in winter\, native plants can be seen all around us. Join naturalist Mary Anne Borge to learn how to identify the standing winter skeletons of some common native plants\, what characteristics to look for and the common types of fruit you might see in winter. We will also discuss the many benefits native plants offer to both wildlife and your own gardens during the winter months. Some plants even take special advantage of the winter months to photosynthesize. Join us to find out how they do it. \nMary Anne Borge is a naturalist\, photographer\, author and educator. She is the editor of Butterfly Gardener Magazine\, a naturalist and instructor at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve and a Pennsylvania master naturalist. She is the team leader for Lambertville Goes Wild\, a volunteer organization that successfully led Lambertville to certification as a community wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. On her blog\, Mary Anne writes about and illustrates with her photography the importance of native plants to all life.\n \nAdditional Information: Online registration for this program closes 12 hours before the start of the class. SUMMARY:Learn About Lichens
DESCRIPTION:Are they plants? Are they fungi? No\, they’re both! Lichens are everywhere you look\, and they are as fascinating as they are ubiquitous. Join lichenologist Dennis Waters to learn about these remarkable botanical partnerships—how they work and how they have grown to be so dependent on each other.  Following a short talk\, we will take an excursion into the Preserve to find lichens growing on trees\, on rocks and on the ground. You will learn about their lifestyles\, their habitats and their important contributions to ecosystems. And you’ll have plenty of chances to try your hand at figuring out which lichen you’re looking at. Please bring a 7-10x hand lens if you have one.  A limited number will be available to borrow. \nDennis Waters has been a lichenologist for 10 years. He is currently completing the first lichenological survey of Mercer County\, N.J.\, in collaboration with the New York Botanical Garden\, the Mercer County Park Commission and the D&R Greenway Land Trust. In recent years\, he has participated in lichen surveys in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula\, the Dare Regional Biodiversity Hotspot in North Carolina\, the Straits Counties of Michigan\, and the Talladega National Forest in Alabama. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Mushroom Walk
DESCRIPTION:Many plant-focused people are not aware of the important roles that fungi\, including mushrooms\, play in the lives of plants. There would be no land plants were it not for the fungi that nourish them!  Marion Kyde\, Ph.D.\, will cover a few of the amazing things that you probably don’t know about fungi\, along with photos of the colorful and unusual macrofungi in our woods and fields. Much of the information will be about new research which is telling even mycologists what they don’t know about fungi. \nMarion M. Kyde\, Ph.D.\, lives in Tinicum Township in the middle of a woods full of magical (not magic) mushrooms. She has lectured locally on mushrooms for 20 years and writes for the Tinicum Conservancy Newsletter and the Bucks County Herald on environmental and local issues. An award-winning and pioneering conservationist\, Marion received her bachelor’s\, masters and doctorate degrees from Rutgers University and currently serves as the vice chair on the Tinicum Township Land Preservation Committee.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion - Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park
DESCRIPTION:When a pair of red-tailed hawks builds a nest atop a Fifth Avenue apartment house across the street from the model-boat pond\, author Marie Winn and a cadre of fellow naturalists are soon transformed into obsessed hawk watchers. The hilarious and occasionally heartbreaking saga of Pale Male and his mate as they struggle to raise a family in their unprecedented nest site\, and the affectionate portrait of the humans who fall under their spell\, will delight and inspire readers for years to come. \nJoin Naturalist Monica Flynn as we learn about the natural history of Central Park and beyond through the eyes of Pale Male\, a very special hawk indeed.  Book discussion will be followed by tour of the meadow\, where we’ll look for our very own red-tailed hawk and discover the food web that supports him.  Participants should read Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park by Marie Winn prior to the program.

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Walk
DESCRIPTION:Instead of hunkering down and bemoaning the longest night of the year—also known as the winter solstice—celebrate with a stroll through the Preserve with Education Coordinator Kelly Joslin. We’ll celebrate the joys of winter with a walk on the Preserve trails at a time when the sun is lowest in the sky and we experience the shortest days of the year. We’ll conclude in the Visitor Center with hot drinks and cookies.
